the Plunge

missional living and learning in the city

imagine…

Your students, leaders, and those who lead your churches and/or organizations joining with what God is doing in our community!

A Note from Colin Potts – Bellingham Plunge Director

I have led youth ministry and shared life with students for over a decade. After ten years I discovered the two things I love most about youth ministry; long-term relationships and local mission trips. Since leaving full-time, paid youth ministry, I have been called into Downtown Bellingham to join God in what he is doing there. My dream is to help facilitate and participate in the Bellingham Plunge Mission Exposure Trips with student groups from around Whatcom County. These trips are usually five - six days long from Thursday to Tuesday.

I am sure we will be in contact soon, but until then I hope that you will pray and wrestle with this opportunity for your group. I am excited to see what the trips will look like this summer and what happens when we join together to create what these trips will become and how they ultimately infect our everyday lives. Most importantly I wish I could let the students who have gone convince you that you should take your group on this trip. Every year they always say it was their favorite experience.

There is also the option of a one-day Plunge exerience for youth and/or adults. This one day exposure to the "city-scape" is a great opportunity for groups to begin to build a heart for the city. The one- day Plunge has already proven to be a great time of learning for students at the Bellingham campus of Trinity Western University and other groups of adult and youth "learners" throughout the county.

  • “It’s an amazing trip to your city!” -10th Grader who was on her third five-day long Plunge trip.

  • "Doing the one- day plunge helps put one in the shoes of the disadvantaged. It is one thing to see these people around town or in our community: it is another to actually try and experience what they go through just to survive. That is what the one -day plunge is all about. You will walk through town, visiting some of our organizations who put forth efforts to help the disadvantaged. You will then read through a case study about a disadvantaged family, and you will try to figure out how the community can come together to take the plunge and help them survive." - Chris, MSW student at Eastern Washington University and one-day Plunge participant.
